SAO PAULO – Last weekend the city of Manaus, capital of the state of Amazonas, faced a wave of violence provoked by the criminal faction known as the Comando Vermelho. This faction is originally from Rio de Janeiro, but in early 2020 it dominated drug trafficking in the state, which is a major route for international trafficking, and also dominated prisons in the region.
On Monday, the 7th, the city had its public services interrupted after a day of criminal attacks in protest at the killing of a drug trafficking leader by the Military Police of Amazonas.
